<span style="font-size: large;"><b>A fledgling Mourning Dove waits on the fence while Mom eats in the feeding area. Why? Because when Mom eats she then regurgitates the food to feed Junior. <b style="font-size: x-large;">The Robin fledglings have begun to come off the nest so Dad is having a busy time feeding them.</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>And I have been having a busy and frustrating couple of days attempting to get a picture of the Robin fledgling in the staging area. See Junior down center? Around here, he and his brethren spend the first few days off the nest standing on the compost pile in the clear chirping for dinner in clear view so Dad won't miss them. It is sort of a "Here I Am" runway. When I show up to take their photograph they high tail it back into the foliage for the safety of invisibility. It has taken me literally days to get the drop on a fledgling in the clear to take a photograph. Finally... got 'em!</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>When I turn after finally getiing a fledgling Robin picture... and it is "a" picture, no reshoots possible with these guys.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>A bit later when I go out to pick this years particularly abundant strawberry crop, I note that the neighbors are all looking down the storm drain on the other side of the street.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Quite odd. Not at all usual as you might suspect. A fascinating storm drain?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The kids start calling to me...Donna, DONNA! There's a kitten down there....in the drain. Oh boy, this doesn't sound good at all.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I go over. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>We all stare at the extremely heavy butch drain cover. It seems the kitten has disappeared into a hole in the concrete above the big pipe that drains the rain during gully washers. Beneath the the big pipe is several feet of water. How did kitten manage to get into the little cave above without drowning in the first place?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>It is decided that the big extremely heavy steel drain cover must be removed in order to do anything for kitten. Is it removable? Is it locked into place somehow? Can it be removed without special equipment? Kitten meows pitifully from inside her little cave overlooking the several feet of water.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Two of the men who have gravitated to our </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>little-tragedy-waiting-to-happen grab hold of the extremely heavy drain cover and scoot it off the concrete hole in the gutter onto the road. Ooooboy not a good place for a kitten AT ALL.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The men discuss just how long kitten's cave or tunnel, depending, might be? The women discuss how to get kitten out of the tunnel. We decide food is the obvious lure. I head back across the street for cat food. While thinking on that, it occurs to me that I have a live trap which we could put in the hole with cat food in it, jerry rig some way for the entrance of the trap to be abutted to the kitty tunnel kitten is hiding in some how and hope kitten is hungry enough to come out of her tunnel to eat and be safely trapped.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Sounds a little pipe dreamy doesn't it? What can I say? It was the best we could do in the moment.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>In the meantime....</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I think this is how it happened as remember, I am across the street getting supplies... a guy who maybe works for the township sees all these people staring into an open drain hole where a big heavy grate is supposed to be.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>He stops his car and gets out.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The group explains the emergency. I understand that he did not seem particularly impressed. He may have been more interested in the fact we were taking apart city property...</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Eventually, he has enough of the whole thing, stretches down, squinshes around, sticks his arm into the kitten tunnel and pulls kitten out.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Jubilation!!! </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I appear at this point, and there in the neighbor woman's hand is a tiny kitten, too young to even eat solid food. But a very brave, very dirty beautiful kitten with longish peachy fur and big blue kitten eyes. </b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Here is a perfect example of a Bald Eagle's nest...cup shaped with a flat top with Mom keeping the proverbial eagle's eye on her surroundings....just in case.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Interesting, though bowl shaped, the Bald Eagle's nest doesn't have a concave shape on the inside, but rather the top is quite flat compared to many other species. This must have some evolutionarial advantage though I can't currently think of what it might be.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>The first salwart male Robin arrived a few weeks ago even though the temperature the other night was only 10F and we've had snow besides. They come early to secure the best nest sites and so far I've never seen them succumb to the weather. <span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Today I'm down by the Race just outside of Brodhead looking to see if the Bald Eagles or Red-tails are hunting in a conservation area that at times is almost a marsh.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>See?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>No raptors. I head for higher ground.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>This is the Race and believe it or not this is man made. <span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Well if they were going to get that train they'd better have something more going for them. They decided they needed a mill. And a mill could be run by water. But not the well water they had been using. Rather they needed running water to turn a water wheel for power. They decided to dig a race from the Sugar River which was miles and miles away.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Okay, yes there were steam powered shovels back then but as it turned out, numerous portions of the race had to be dug by hand. Yup, actual guys with hand shovels, dug parts of the Race. The mind reels.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>While putting gas in my car I noticed three crows (often the number of a crow raiding party) on top of the Train Station Museum across the street.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Crow One, far left, appears to be eating something just over the roof ridge.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Crow Two, in the middle, has an eye on the far right Crow Three, who has just flown in and is eating something as well. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>A digression...</b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Crows, as some of you may remember from the blogs when Tristan and Isolde and their nest were attacked by crows, often work in threes.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>One crow each to occupy each adult hawk while the third would attempt to raid the nest itself, for eggs or small eyasses. They were never successful.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>In this case it appears that two crows have gone off individually and found goodies certainly not nest robbing at this time of year, but they don't appear to be sharing whatever it is.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Perhaps in this dynamic they go off individually to find food and then come back to base camp?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Two says something and looks down. Three stands up and stands with eye, no doubt, on Two.</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>One would commonly expect a rabbit for an Easter Blog but not this Easter and it is this guy's fault.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I had an Eastern Cottontail in my camera sights. Suddenly the bunny looked up with such focus removing his gaze from me to something else which caused him to freeze even tighter.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I looked up and it was a Turkey Vulture. WHAT? A Turkey Vulture? Rabbits don't get eaten by vultures. Well not unless they are dead and therefore past caring.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I looked back at bunny. But bunny had hippity hopped at rabbit speed somewhere, not to be seen again, at least by me, since.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Then the question becomes, was bunny really afraid of those wide wings in the sky, or have I just been duped by a rabbit.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>She isn't saying. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Therefore Happy Easter from the Cottontail, the Turkey Vulture and Me!</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Busted! Once again Quicksilver the African Grey Parrot is caught in the act. For whatever reason, Silver has never met a full pincushion he can bear to leave alone. He has a compulsion....the pincushion must be plucked of it's pins.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>And he is serious about it. He will not be denied. Note how his eyes are a touch slitty. If I leaned down right now to pick up a pin to replace it, he would likely nab my hand with his exceedingly sharp beak.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>We must proceed with caution. Let's take a look at the bigger picture.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkLAGhVc9XEXQZsilTBVjBySrOY62cvHQuWtyecVBGTDDgy1T0bg6PMsU5McdPD1AW-ohmnPLYNVdaWMEs26hgQF3FtErqlPFoj_mYZh57la0iG6HbemSNYSriDJK669lIEEV16w/s1600/DSC_0743cred2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="847" data-original-width="1025" height="528" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkLAGhVc9XEXQZsilTBVjBySrOY62cvHQuWtyecVBGTDDgy1T0bg6PMsU5McdPD1AW-ohmnPLYNVdaWMEs26hgQF3FtErqlPFoj_mYZh57la0iG6HbemSNYSriDJK669lIEEV16w/s640/DSC_0743cred2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Squirrel the Cat has arrived to check out the action. Parrot vs Human interactions with the added variable with a pin cushion are</b></span><b style="font-size: x-large;"> always fascinating. Who is going to bleed. Note where Silver's feet are.</b><br />

<b><span style="font-size: large;"> </span> </b><span style="text-align: center;"><b>Courtesy of www.aerospace.org/</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>While I do that lets talk about kettling. Basically kettling is circling up on the updrafts of warmer air created by warmer terrain, like paved roads for instance or darker colored ground without cooling grass on it.The rising air lifts the birds up on those big wings and they may have to flap now and again but it is downright relaxing compared to all the usual flapping they have to do ordinarily to gain altitude.</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinfnCWw2F86sVfPzo842uogQMvdQ7YSP3vgl0gCn-0RfgolYm2-uGyicBNLjekdfUHFKt4JRrYWssmHEziANCJOzvYWxJU-y1T9_r26A-lWYMQVSNRXqkV9jvuUuzPERKdSmbVDA/s1600/DSC_0726cred.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="452" data-original-width="529" height="546" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinfnCWw2F86sVfPzo842uogQMvdQ7YSP3vgl0gCn-0RfgolYm2-uGyicBNLjekdfUHFKt4JRrYWssmHEziANCJOzvYWxJU-y1T9_r26A-lWYMQVSNRXqkV9jvuUuzPERKdSmbVDA/s640/DSC_0726cred.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I'm back and look through the camera. HEY! Wait a minute those aren't Turkey Vultures those are Sandhill Cranes! </b></span><br />
<br />
<b style="font-size: x-large;">I'd never seen Sandhills kettle but it does makes perfect sense. No doubt a behavior of many species of wide winged heavy birds. </b><br />
<b style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></b>
<b style="font-size: x-large;">Turkey Vultures only weigh a couple of pounds and kettle whereas a Sandhill male of average weight is 10.1 pounds, and a female is 8.9 pounds so they can really put this behavioral advantage to good use. </b><br />
<b style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></b>
<b style="font-size: x-large;">By the way though not pictured above there is a Sandhill Crane way up at the top of the kettling air waiting for everyone else to get closer. I'm assuming he is the lead bird of the moment.</b><br />
<b style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></b>
<b style="font-size: x-large;">That makes seven birds in this particular Sandhill flock.</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippdVccYpa2zBiTsECcEDOlJVE44DeV6pJ_XrQt1iatt2SJLT6G-9JOmz1KHj8QPfsBjAWL7PEVCjPuPEADgTDIiIvOic7gy_dYIqAuPPfAVJKrRqFLQeVzB-Nq7jWXY3PK9GQkw/s1600/DSC_0728cred2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="498" data-original-width="507" height="626" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippdVccYpa2zBiTsECcEDOlJVE44DeV6pJ_XrQt1iatt2SJLT6G-9JOmz1KHj8QPfsBjAWL7PEVCjPuPEADgTDIiIvOic7gy_dYIqAuPPfAVJKrRqFLQeVzB-Nq7jWXY3PK9GQkw/s640/DSC_0728cred2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Here are all seven of the Sandhills in their current positions. The bottom four are heading right. The one above them is going up steeper and right while the one on the left is in a different position all together.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">5:22 PM Pale Male brought a half eaten pigeon(or rat) to Octavia, who was sitting on the Fifth Avenue nest. Pale landed on the nest, she got up, accepted the meal, took off with it and headed uptown to eat it. Pale then sat down on the nest.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">5:58 PM Octavia returned with a full crop. It took about 45 seconds, to maybe a minute, for Pale Male to get up and letOctavia take her turn again to sit on the nest. Pale then took off again, headed North. I think Octavia has overnighted. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>6:34PM Meet Esmeralda, the formel of the Monroe, Wisconsin watertower nest.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>It was late today, and cloudy besides when I arrived. Esmeralda popped her head up when I first appeared with the camera, like a good mom hawk, and did not seem nearly as petrified as the country hawks I've attempted to photograph in the area. But then again her human neighbors report that this has been an active nest for about fourteen years. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Her mate Hugo, flew into the top part of an evergreen where he was invisible to check me out for a moment or two, decided I looked harmless and then took his leave to go about his late day business. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The Faith family who live to the left of the water tower are the ones who first alerted me to this nest. They reported that on two occasions over the years they found a Red-tail just standing in kind of a stupor in their back yard. They called the local rehabber who came and retrieved the hawk, treated it, and brought it back to the yard for release. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>It is good to know that someone is looking out for them. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Of course the formel may not always have been Esmeralda (or Hugo either) but if too frightened by people she wouldn't have chosen this site when her mate Hugo showed her, her yearly options.</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_qK9C8dz3ehsdXL-QIg-C5OOZ7o0uE7eWaLDeS3Yff_G68v0hzf7ZQLVZKRifDAI6fnTfb-MuhhN2ZAkUlCdKG7nQDgGND4_1JLl6sgpnGfXkpDU3xDXb_D7SU9VCCIEmvzVzpg/s1600/DSC_0393watertower.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_qK9C8dz3ehsdXL-QIg-C5OOZ7o0uE7eWaLDeS3Yff_G68v0hzf7ZQLVZKRifDAI6fnTfb-MuhhN2ZAkUlCdKG7nQDgGND4_1JLl6sgpnGfXkpDU3xDXb_D7SU9VCCIEmvzVzpg/s640/DSC_0393watertower.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The water tower has a full blown neighborhood of houses around it and a playground just beyond its legs to the right besides.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The nest is situated on the catwalk just to the left of the leg support center. From this view, just beyond where the black walnut tree branches criscross each other.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Note the water tower is surrounded by black walnut trees whose nuts in season are a magnet for squirrels. Not only is the tower a nifty place for a nest it is also a hunting perch when the nuts are in season.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Just to the right of the tower there is a children's playground which draws children of course. Kids bring snacks and aren't all that tidy at times so that area too is a draw for prey. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The original Urban Hawk, Pale Male, often hunts playground areas at dusk when the children have gone home and the rodents are on the prowl for dinner. </b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b style="font-size: x-large;">6:42 PM Esmeralda's head disappears into the nest. You can just see the twigs on the edge of the catwalk center if you look carefully.</b><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>7:15 PM I waited a little over a half hour to see if Esmeralda was going to give another look over the edge. Nope. She appears to be in for the night, whether she is still warming eggs or now brooding eyasses.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The next step will be for me to arrive earlier in the day and hope for Hugo to show up with prey and see if any feeding commences.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Happy Hawking!</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b> These are morel mushrooms. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b> In some parts of the country, the parts that know about them, in a normal year they can sell for $35 to $75 a pound. And morel hunters quard their morel grounds with a serious secrecy. You'd think they were guarding a moonshine still in some cases.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>They are not grown commercially. Why? Because the little rascals are totally and completely uncooperative.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>They are said to grow in forests on slopes under particular kinds of trees...ash, elm, oak, and aspen. Early Spring they grow in open woods often on south facing slopes and later in the season deeper in the woods on north facing slopes. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Just about sunset today, I walked past the edge of my prairie garden, a flat area where milkweed is beginning to emerge, the closest trees are maple and they are a good way away. There in the mulch from last year and trailing into the lawn were the above.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I asked. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Yes, they are morel mushrooms. No slope. None of the signature trees. And certainly not a forest.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b> Fascinating.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Just goes to show the "best laid plans of mice and men..." don't mean squat to mushrooms.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Happy Morel Hunting...this is a good year to pay attention to the ground.</b></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Here is Stella's report direct from the Hawk Bench..</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Yesterday at 7:38 PM, I watched Octavia perched high, mid right of the nest and pulling, tearing, and dipping her head into the nest.</b></i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b><br /></b></i></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Three minutes later, Pale Male flew in with a rat, then flew off with it toward the Glade Arch.</b></i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b><br /></b></i></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Today, woohoo!</b></i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Around 7:15pm, Octavia tore away, yanked at bloody meat and gently fed in two places mid left of the nest!</b></i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b><br /></b></i></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Oh Happy Days!</b></i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b><br /></b></i></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>I'm doing the Dance of Joy!!!!</b></i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b><br /></b></i></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>EYASSES!!!!"</b></i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Pale Male and Octavia do it again......</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The residents of the Bench saw the feeding behavior as well and many a happy dance was performed for yet another beginning to another season from New York City's premier Hawk Couple and their Fifth Avenue Nest!!!</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Happy hawking!</b></span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGKz7TjRe89af5rwBCMpxhKGooLBiVGDnTaO533Zqd_CJbnpP-dFZilND2YZuBHTKZI7ykSx2eYGbr6y9N6vRz4J5Q7RbM98-QshdC6zYEmMu7qgpjPGlb3C_VvtuXrijJ5LQ4mg/s1600/DSC_1507.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGKz7TjRe89af5rwBCMpxhKGooLBiVGDnTaO533Zqd_CJbnpP-dFZilND2YZuBHTKZI7ykSx2eYGbr6y9N6vRz4J5Q7RbM98-QshdC6zYEmMu7qgpjPGlb3C_VvtuXrijJ5LQ4mg/s640/DSC_1507.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>April the celebrity pregnant giraffe</b></span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClnQCgFa9lCBL-KXZMOoO9Q/live"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClnQCgFa9lCBL-KXZMOoO9Q/live</span></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>As many of you likely know by now, April the Giraffe and her consort, Oliver, are expecting a new calf any minute. And as the cam was shut down for awhile due to a complaint about the feed being "sexually explicit" plus "nudity which is against youtube policy. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>The complaint may well have been a prank...</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b> At any rate, cooler heads prevailed and the live cam is back up with a million jillion new users.</b></span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClnQCgFa9lCBL-KXZMOoO9Q/live">https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClnQCgFa9lCBL-KXZMOoO9Q/live</a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>But having been watching April made me realize how little I knew or had even thought about when it came to giraffes.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>She appeared to be chewing a cud.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Indeed they are cud chewers. You'll see April chew, chew, chew, swallow it, bring it back up and chew, chew, chew some more.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Then someone wanted to know if a giraffe was kosher in the Jewish tradition. Indeed as it is in the cloven hoof category and chews a cud, the vets contacted in Israel decided indeed yes they are kosher. Not that they planned on eating one, of course. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>I also noted when April leaned over to eat some fodder she raised her back left leg a little.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>You guessed it. While standing straight up on all fours giraffes mouths can't touch the ground.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>After watched April keep walking around in the middle of the night for hours. I began wondering if this was pre-labor or quite the usual for a giraffe.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Indeed giraffes in the wild very seldom lie down. It is too impossible to get up in a hurry when a tiger is heading for you. Also they only sleep for about three hours in short spurts anyway. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Hardly worth the trouble.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Then I looked up at the video feed and April had laid down. Geez.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>That's not a sign of labor. They give birth to standing up. Is something going wrong?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Nope.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Turns out giraffes in captivity do lay down on occasion and also slip in an extra hour, count 'em </b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Oliver by the way has a stall next to April's. He sticks his head in periodically and checks on her. <br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Here is Quicksilver climbing the bed by way of the bedspread. It took me awhile to figure out how he was getting onto the nightstand without alerting me by flight sounds...the flapping of wings. He inventively climbs the bedspread, trots across the bed and walks onto the nightstand, silently, in order to have his way with whatever might be on it.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
<b style="font-size: x-large;">Basically he makes a fold with his beak.</b><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRS9-SzQoAftutXE00F4_ehYRdOdM4Ce_Ew4CrQz9un7HQubXJCKwF7Yhokej6EiGN3ehF0xBZiCrWSdOEie3RPUQB5gTdz44r1XkOeE45r-av87uG8wB8vmiuf2N_HfmLlLttxg/s1600/DSC_1373cred.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRS9-SzQoAftutXE00F4_ehYRdOdM4Ce_Ew4CrQz9un7HQubXJCKwF7Yhokej6EiGN3ehF0xBZiCrWSdOEie3RPUQB5gTdz44r1XkOeE45r-av87uG8wB8vmiuf2N_HfmLlLttxg/s640/DSC_1373cred.JPG" width="382" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>He lifts his left foot up and grabs the fold his beak is holding.</b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>(For whatever reason African Greys tend to be left footed.)</b></span><br />
